Where do Russian gangsters get their money from?

I'm constantly hearing of Russian billionaires who have stolen their money from the state but how exactly does this work?

I understand that when communism fell some blokes basically just strong armed their way into power companies, mining coorporatuons etc and took over the business (funny enough I know a famous dj who started his dj career in basically the same way).

But how else is it happening? Are gangsters getting a cut of taxes etc? I don't see how 25 years after the ussr fell they are still able to steal from the state

You or your associates are tight with the government
The government gives or sells you public assets or rights at a greatly undervalued price
You find other people who have assets and ‘persuade’ them that they should give them to you
You kill a few people on the way round
Then you take your gains and legitimise them by buying assets in the West (of London) and employ expensive men and put them in blue shirts

The first generation - Abramovic et al - shifted their money into legitimate business, is my guess.

Their successors are less into keep your hands clean, white collar crime, but sheer brutality. And deals with a corrupt police force. possibly even at a high level.

After Gorbachev dismantled the authoritarian state. It was decided, by his successors to privatise all the assets of the state ie. the property of the Russian people. There was a process of awarding the assets to whoever paid the biggest bribes for ridiculously low prices. In other words the assets were fiddled from the taxpayer by corrupt politicians like Yeltsin and corrupt oligarchs like Abramovitch.

Abramovitch is not a nice person by any stretch of the imagination

Russian mafia is basically what pirates were to the English crown. Not official but shared goals and as such the state lets them monopolise the market. of couree having the Russian state at your back makes you a very saucy player in the global game.

In the move from communism when the Russian state owned everything, to the free market, most of the assets of the states were handed out to the powerful former communist officials.

It became a bit of a game of thrones in the years after that where the most ruthless rose to the top.

Putin came in and basically came in and restored order, to a degree, where he left most of them alone if they didn’t try to take political power and instead focused on making money.

So in addition to the normal graft and such they are also given access to the nations assets. To extract oil or Nat gas, build government projects, fill government orders, all of which come at massive profit to them at the expense of the Russian people.

A billion dollars simply disappeared from the Russian space program, for example. When you control the government and there’s little or no free press, it’s easy to steal money.
